THANKSGIVING DAY

It is held the fourth Thursday in November. When people think of Thanksgiving Day, most remember the story of the Pilgrims who arrived on the Mayflower in December 11, 1620. Most of them died.

They had a traditional British Harvest Feast in thanks to God for surviving and blessing of provisions thet would see then through the Winter. They actually had more meat than vegetables, including venison, fish and wildfowl, which may or may not have actually been turkey. They probably didn't heve much in the way of desserts, as they didn't have a lot of flour or sugar on hand. They probably had some fruits and corn. Instead of pumpkin pie, the probably had boiled pumpkin. The first Thanksgiving Feast lasted for three days.

 HALLOWEEN

Halloween is a traditional celebration held on October 31st. Today, Halloween is an excuse for Halloween theme costumes perties and entertainment with horror films, haunted houses and other activities around the popular themes of ghosts, witches, Dracula, warewolves and the supernatural. Children love to dress up in Halloween costumes and go from door-to-door in their neighbourhood, following the old tradition os trick-or treating, collecting sweets and gifts, sometimes money.

Halloween began as an ancient Celtic Festival in Great Britain and Ireland, and has survived most strongly among Irish, Scottish and Welsh communities. Inmigrants from these communities carried the tradition to North America where it has gained in popularity. In turn, as part of American pop culture, Halloween has spread in popularity to most corners of the English speaking western world, and increasingly into western Europe in recent times.

       DID YOU KNOW?

The word sandwich that we use today was born in London during the very late hours one night in 1762. It was named after John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sándwich, an 18th century English aristocrat ( 1718 - 1792 ). As the story goes, in 1762, during a 24 hour gambling streak he instructed a cook to prepare his food in such a way that it would not interfere with his game. The cook presented him with sliced meat between two pieces of toast. Perfectly this meal required no utensils such fork or knife and could be eaten with one hand, leaving the other free to continue the game. The nobleman was able to continue his gambling while eating his snack and because Montagu also happened to be the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, others began to order " the same as Sandwich". It is said that Lord Sandwich was fond of this form of food because it allowed him to continue playing cards while eating without getting the cards greasy from eating meat with his bare hands.

From that incident, we have inherited that quick-food product that we know as the sandwich. Sadly, the name of real inventor of it was not recorded for posterity. Besides the more obvious meaning of sandwich , " something edible between two or more slices of bread ", metaphorically speaking, it also means " to squeeze in between two other people, places, things materials, etc " For example : Her car was sandwiched between two other cars in the parking lot.
